Ink type and drying mechanism
Water-based ink: uses water as solvent, contains acrylic resin, pigment and additives, and dries by evaporation of water. The drying speed is affected by the ambient humidity, and the pH value (8.5-9.5) needs to be controlled to maintain stability. Typical products such as non-woven water-based inks are RoHS-compliant, have strong adhesion and rich colors.
Solvent-based inks: Contain alcohol and ester solvents, have outstanding fast drying properties (15-20 minutes to dry on the surface), and are suitable for non-absorbent substrates such as plastic films. They need to be stored at 18-32°C to avoid viscosity changes caused by high temperatures.
UV inks: Cured by ultraviolet light, dry instantly (<1 second), have high gloss and strong wear resistance after curing. LED-UV inks have low energy consumption, such as MontAge α WEB series with a bio-based content of ＞30%, and a full score of INGEDE for deinking. Free radical UV inks have a shrinkage rate as low as 70%, suitable for high-speed label printing.
Technical parameters
Viscosity: Water-based ink is usually 100-500 mPa・s, UV ink is as low as 50-200 mPa・s, and solvent-based ink is adjusted according to the formula.
Drying speed: Water-based ink dries at 150-300 feet/minute (45-90 meters/minute), and UV ink needs to match an LED light source of more than 80W.
Ink volume control: Anilox roller line count recommendation: 150-300 lpi for paper printing, 350-600 lpi for fine label printing, and a closed scraper system is recommended for UV ink.

Paper printing
Packaging materials: Water-based inks are used for corrugated boxes and paper bags. They are quick-drying and environmentally friendly, and meet food packaging requirements.
Book and magazine printing:
Highly bio-based LED-UV inks replace traditional thermosetting inks, reducing 6.5 tons of CO₂/ton of ink emissions, and the paper does not deform.
Label printing
Food labels: UV inks are resistant to oil migration. For example, free radical UV inks are FDA-certified and used for dairy product labels.
Logistics labels:
Solvent-based inks, which dry quickly and have little solvent residue, are suitable for BOPP films.

In food label printing, is it more appropriate to choose water-based, solvent-based or UV ink?
UV ink is preferred for food label printing because it has the characteristics of oil and grease migration resistance. For example, free radical UV ink is FDA-certified and can directly contact foods such as dairy products and edible oils. If the substrate is paper food packaging (such as paper bags), water-based ink is an environmentally friendly choice and meets FDA 175.300 food contact standards; although solvent-based ink dries quickly, alcohol-soluble formulas (such as RF type) must be selected to reduce VOC residues. It is only recommended for outer labels that do not directly contact food.
When printing fine labels (such as 350-600 lpi), what are the special requirements for ink viscosity and anilox roller?
Fine label printing requires matching low-viscosity inks (UV ink 50-200 mPa・s, water-based ink 100-300 mPa・s) to ensure uniform ink transfer on the anilox roller. The line count of the anilox roller needs to reach 350-600 lpi, and a closed scraper system is recommended to avoid blurring of the pattern caused by ink residue. In addition, UV ink needs to be matched with an LED light source of more than 80W to ensure instant curing during high-speed printing (40,000 sheets/hour) to prevent smearing.
